PlayMemories Camera Apps Help Guide

Digital Filter

Using “Digital Filter,” you can create shooting effects similar to graduated ND, reverse graduated ND, half color, color stripe, and other filters used in landscape photography, etc. For example, you can use it to shoot the beautiful “golden hour” or “blue hour” just before or after sunrise and sunset.

Shooting tips

How to save images in the RAW format

  • Images with effects applied can be saved in the RAW format with this application. Select MENU → [Quality] → [RAW & JPEG] or [RAW] in the application. When you first launch the application, [Quality] is set to the same setting as the camera.

How to create exposure differentials

  • For normal landscape shooting, it is recommended that you create exposure differentials using the shutter speed rather than the aperture value or ISO sensitivity.
    • If a different aperture value is set for each area, the depth of field may not be even, or the defocusing of the boundary may look unnatural.
    • If a different ISO sensitivity is set for each area, there may be significant noise.
To change the shutter speed while keeping the same aperture value, set the shooting mode to A (Aperture Priority) before performing exposure compensation.
  • When the ISO sensitivity is locked in the M (Manual Exposure) mode, exposure compensation is deactivated, so all the areas have the same exposure in the default settings. You can create an exposure differential using the shutter speed, etc. by unlinking the areas. To unlink the areas, press the Fn button or button.

To shoot a moving subject

  • This application shoots two or three times and then creates an image with effects applied. If you compose the shot so that any moving subject is not located in the boundary defocusing area, the resulting image will look more natural.
  • To avoid missing a shot, set the area containing the moving subject as the first shooting area using [Shooting Order].

If the sky area on the shooting screen is blown out

  • If you set a positive value for the ground area exposure compensation, the sky area may be blown-out on the shooting screen, making it difficult to adjust the composition. In this case, select MENU → [Filter Shoot. Settings] → [Shoot. Screen Set.], and then select the sky area. The exposure and white balance of the sky area will be applied on the shooting screen, making it easier to adjust the composition.

If colors appear in a blown out area

  • If there are blown-out highlights in a recorded image, colors may appear in that part of the image with effects applied. In this case, you can reduce the phenomenon by decreasing the exposure or color difference between the areas, or by adjusting the defocus and the position of the boundary to prevent the blown-out highlights in the image with effects applied.

Notes on use

  • For the setting items that are common to the camera MENU and the application MENU (such as [Quality] and [Image Size]), the applications setting is prioritized.
  • Exposure and aperture values are set for each area in the application. Even if your camera has an exposure compensation dial or aperture ring, the application setting will be prioritized.
  • When using this application, the focus is locked from the first shot onward.
  • When using a vertical grip during shooting, you may be unable to shoot if one of the two batteries in the vertical grip is running low. Replace the low battery with a new one.
  • While the [Preview] or [Finishing Adjustment] screen is displayed, the access lamp on the camera stays lit up. This means that the memory card is being accessed, so do not remove the memory card while the access lamp is lit up.
